Robert Lucas & Canned Heat LIVE Bonn, Germany, November 4, 2007
Former Canned Heat frontman Robert Lucas, a
skilled slide-guitarist and harp player, died on Sunday, November 23rd,
2008 from an apparent drug overdose, according to his manager Skip
Taylor. The Long Beach, California native was just 46 years old.
Lucas first became known to blues fans as a member of guitarist
Bernie Pearl's late-1970s band, originally playing harmonica behind
artists like Big Joe Turner, Lowell Fulson, Percy Mayfield
and other West Coast blues and R&B singers. Lucas worked on his
skills for years before launching his own band, Luke & the
Locomotives, in 1986.Lucas hooked up with boogie-rock kings Canned Heat in 1994 as singer, guitarist and harp player, and would first appear on the band's 1996 Blues Band album, the last featuring founding member and guitarist Henry Vestine.
Between 1994 and 2008, Lucas served two stints as the band's frontman, touring the world in front of the band and contributing songs, instrumentation and vocals to recordings like 1999's Boogie 2000 and the band's 2007 Christmas album.

PINETOP PERKINS w/ the Tony O Band - Live 1994.10.30 Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Syracuse, NY
Pinetop Perkins was one of the last great
Mississippi bluesmen. He began playing
blues in the late 1920s, and is widely regarded as one of
the best – and certainly most enduring – blues pianists. He
has forged a style that has influenced three generations of
piano players, and continues to be the yardstick by which
great blues pianists are measured.
Born Willie Perkins in Belzoni, Mississippi in 1913, Pinetop started out playing guitar and piano at house parties and honky-tonks, but dropped the guitar in the 1940s after sustaining a serious injury in his left arm. He worked primarily in the Mississippi Delta throughout the 1930s and ‘40s, spending three years with Sonny Boy Williamson on the King Biscuit Time radio show on KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. Pinetop also toured extensively with slide guitar player Robert Nighthawk and backed him on an early Chess session. After briefly working with B.B. King in Memphis, Perkins barnstormed the South with Earl Hooker during the early ‘50s. The pair completed a session for Sam Phillips’ famous Sun Records in 1953. It was at this session that he recorded his version of “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie,” a song originally written and recorded by pianist Clarence “Pinetop” Smith – the influential blues pianist who had died from a gunshot wound at age 24 in 1929. Although referred to as “Pinetop” when he played on King Biscuit in the 40s, it was his sensational version of this song that secured his lifelong nickname.
Although he enjoyed success as a solo artist since the 1980s, Pinetop was known for holding down the piano chair in the great Muddy Waters Band for twelve years during the pinnacle of Muddy’s career. Replacing Otis Spann in 1969, Pinetop helped shape the Waters sound and anchored Muddy’s memorable combo throughout the seventies with his brilliant piano solos. In 1980, Pinetop and other members of Muddy’s crew struck out on their own and formed the Legendary Blues Band – a group that recorded two records for Rounder and toured extensively, culling several GRAMMY® nominations.

Johnny Copeland Live at the Chicago Blues Festival '93
Copeland was born in Haynesville, Louisiana, United States. Influenced by T-Bone Walker, he formed the 'Dukes of Rhythm' in Houston, Texas, and made his recording debut in 1956, signing with Duke Records the following year. Although his early records met with little commercial success, he became a popular touring act over the next two decades.
His early recording career embraced blues, soul and rock and roll. He cut singles for Mercury, Golden Eagle and All Boy, amongst others. His first single was "Rock 'n' Roll Lily" and he later cut successes such as "Down On Bending Knees" and "Please Let Me Know". For the most part, his singles featured Copeland as a vocalist more than a guitar player.
Copeland also played at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival, as a guest with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Vaughan and Copeland performed the Bob Geddins song, "Tin Pan Alley" together on Vaughan's Blues At Sunrise compilation album. He also played on the first edition of BRBF (Blues Peer Festival) later that year.
He won a Grammy in 1987 for best traditional blues album for the album Showdown!, recorded with Albert Collins and Robert Cray.
His later years were dogged by ill health due to a congenital heart defect. He died, aged 60, in Harlem, New York, from complications of heart surgery for a heart transplanted six months earlier.
His daughter, Shemekia Copeland, established a successful career as a singer.

Royal Southern Brotherhood - Isernhagen, Germany 2012
Royal Southern Brotherhood is an impressive collective of experienced musicians. In my opinion they play some of the best blues, rock and soul music that has been heard in the last years.
