Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters - Live At Waterfront Blues Fest (July 7, 2013)

This time The Rippin Frog goes out of the blues and presents us:

Robert Plant
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 7, 2013

Again this year recorded from KBOO FM 90.7 here in Portland. A volunteer radio station that has broadcast the festival each and every year. It has become a huge festival & we stopped going due to the big crowds. I now record all that I can & enjoy sharing with you all. As with any all volunteer station there are a few blurps along the way, which I have "fixed" as well as I can. Enjoy, twofthrs

Before his recent projects in Nashville with Alison Krauss and Band of Joy, Plant worked alongside the very interesting force, “Strange Sensation”, recording the critically acclaimed, multi-Grammy nominated albums – “Dreamland” and “Mighty Rearranger”. From this platform, Sensational Space Shifters has developed. Now together these confederates and conspirators dig deeper and more intensely, always twisting and turning, bringing the past into a brilliant technicolour present.
It's impressive company:
Justin Adams - a childhood in the Middle East and teenage years with a soundtrack of UK punk set the tone for Adams ' musical adventures. He has produced Grammy winning Desert poets Tinariwen and Algerian Rai rebel Rachid Taha, as well as playing guitar and writing with Jah Wobble, Sinead O' Connor , Natasha Atlas and many more. Three award winning albums with Juldeh  Camara for Peter Gabriel's Real World label have been the latest in a series of collaborations with Master Musicians from North and West Africa.
John Baggott - one of the originators of the Bristol Trip hop sound, Baggott cut his teeth as a teenage piano prodigy playing with visiting US legends like Jimmy Witherspoon and Charlie Feathers. He contributed to seminal work by Portishead, combining musicality with cutting edge sonic texturing and sampling, which led him to become a member of the Massive Attack team. He has also composed film and tv music for Emmy award winning documentaries and most recently worked with songstress Anna Calvi on a new album.
Juldeh Camara - Juldeh was taught the Ritti ( one- string African Violin) by his blind Griot
father , who was reputedly taught himself by the forest spirits of Gambia who took his eyesight in return for the gift . A traditional Fulani village musician , Juldeh's exceptional talent and charisma took him first to Banjul , Gambia's capital and then around the world with Ifang Bondi . Hearing Adams' Desert inflected Blues he decided the two should collaborate , which led to the groundbreaking Juju records, and in turn to his work with Plant ,where the connections between the Blues and Mother Africa turn full circle.
Billy Fuller - Fuller has been exceptionally creative in the past few years, as a founder member of post rock trio Beak , together with Portishead's Geoff Barrow, he has made two albums and played at the ultra- cool All Tomorrow's Parties Festival amongst many others. He has contributed to albums by Massive Attack ,  the soundtrack for the Banksy movie "Exit via the Gift Shop", guested with Portishead, and toured with Adams and Camara in JuJu. A rock solid bassist he is a vinyl junkie with consummate taste.
Liam “Skin” Tyson - a surreal Scouser ( Liverpudlian ) who now lives in the Misty Mountains of North Wales, his combination of Pastoral acoustic open tuned guitars and electric 21st century psychedelia make him a perfect foil for  Plant’s balladry and fire. He made a massive impact with Brit Pop group Cast in the 90s who had a succession of chart hits, mentored by figures like producer John Leckie. He built a studio in his Barn where he recorded his Men from Mars project and from where he nurtures local bands in between surfing and touring.
Dave Smith - originally trained as a jazz drummer and orchestral percussionist, a chance
encounter with West African music led Smith to study sabar drumming in Gambia over a ten year period. He is the hub of a scene of Jazz and electronic improvisers based around the Vortex
club in London, where he leads groups such as Fofoulah and Ruhabi , incorporating polyrhythmic
African drive into their music. Headhunted by Adams and Camara , he brought a Ginger Baker like
energy to their music which now moves to another level in the context of the Sensational Space Shifters.
Plant revels in the excitement generated by the collision of these remarkably powerful forces. Though his contribution to Pop Culture began with his work with Led Zeppelin, his path since has been uncompromising: keep it fresh, spin the bottle, dig deep, embrace the past - visit it – celebrate it – but don’t build a home in it.

News & Updates

A little pause on all the blues that have been shared in the last days by our mate The Rippin Frog (thanks!!!) to report on some updates aboard the blog.
Following requests for putting up the artwok of Studio Magik, the Led Zeppelin studio sessions posted along the month of August, you can find it on this link: Studio Magik covers
Now to Golden Earring. About five years ago was posted a show of this band recorded on the Scheveningen beach in the Netherlands on 1993. Recently I received an email from someone that taped it from the Radio including the encore, that was Radar Love (of course)! He was kind enough to attach this track and now you can download it here and this way have a copy of the full show.
Something that is becoming more and more usual are messages asking for new uploads regarding old posts. With a blog this old what to expect?
I always try to fulfil them but there are cases it can't be done, notably with stuff shared by contributors with whom the contact was lost.
These are some shows that have been recharged lately:
The Outlaws - London 1977
Van Halen: Rocks The Beer Hall (Toronto 1995)
Shakin Street - San Francisco 1979
ZZ Top - April 20, 1980
Pat Travers Band - Queen Mary College 1977
Jethro Tull - Los Angeles Coliseum (1976)
Georgia Satellites: Cleveland 1988
The Firm: Cleveland 1986

And for last an information some of you dedicate followers of soundaboard might want to keep, in case this old blog goes away and you feel disoriented (there are so few blogs around offering unreleased music... hehe) the name to search for is soundsaboard.

Thank you for being aboard, and don't forget to keep on Rocking!

Thorbjørn Risager - Live From Swedish Radio

The Rippin Frog, our blues hero, brings us the warmth of the blues forged in the coldness of the nordic lands.

Thorbjørn Risager - Live From Swedish Radio P4, May 17, 2008

This concert was recorded at Värnamo Rock & Blues Club in Sweden and broadcasted live by Swedish Radio P4. Danish musician mixing the many genres : blues , R & B , rock , jazz and soul . He studied at the
prestigious Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen . In 2002, the guitarist, singer and songwriter with musicians from the Copenhagen blues scene, formed  the septet Thorbjørn Risager Blue7, with which he reached the 2004 debut album Live 2004 grossed.
In 2005 Risager was a Danish blues musician of the year award. His albums no longer appear under
Thorbjørn Risager Blue7, but only under his own name since the second CD From The Heart. Except
with his band occurs Risager in duo with pianist Emil on Balsgaard.  he calls Ray Charles and BB King his mentors/influences.
Ever since the debut, this great Danish vocalist and his equally outstanding band is delivering new albums with about a year’s interval, full of new compositions. How they find time for this – especially the composing – in spite of their intense touring, is a bit of a mystery. But life on the road is definitely a source of inspiration, which some of the songs, and even the cover photos, are reflecting – even though they don’t do so much of their travelling by train…
This guy is well worth your time searching for!!
buy them all !!

CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band heated up the now long gone Zootz Club in Portland, Maine one cold February night more than 20 years ago.
The place was packed and jumping to the zydeco.
The late Harry Hypolite was on guitar.
C.J. Chenier, son of the 'King of Zydeco' Clifton Chenier, joined his father's Red-Hot Louisiana Band playing saxophone at the age of 21.
After Clifton's death in 1987, C.J. picked up the accordion and took charge of his father's ministry - to spread the word of Zydeco music to the world. Since then, Chenier has pushed the genre to new heights with his virtuosity. The Boston Globe has called him "the crown prince of zydeco," and Living Blues magazine hails him as "the best living zydeco singer and accordionist."
His musical style ranges from the traditional Zydeco of Clifton Chenier right on up to modern funk with healthy doses of blues, R&B, swamp pop and even country.
C.J.'s total mastery of the accordion combined with his rich, satisfying voice are the driving forces behind this power-house zydeco band.

Mavis Staples - Live at Portland Waterfront Blues Fest 2013

The Rippin Frog shares here one more show from Mavis Staples.

Mavis Staples
Waterfront Blues Festival
Portland, OR.
July 7, 2013

Again this year recorded from KBOO FM 90.7 here in Portland. A volunteer radio station that has broadcast the festival each and every year.

With her bold new album, You Are Not Alone, Mavis Staples adds a remarkable new chapter to her historic career. The legendary vocalist is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
This project — released more than sixty years after she began singing with her ground-breaking family group, the Staple Singers — is the follow-up to We’ll Never Turn Back, her acclaimed 2007 collection of songs associated with the civil rights movement, and to 2009’s Grammy-nominated live album Hope at the Hideout.
The album stakes out surprising new territory for Staples by matching her with fellow Chicagoan and Wilco bandleader, producer Jeff Tweedy.
“All of these songs are me, but in a different way, with a different sound,” says Staples. Tweedy first saw Staples and her band in 2008 in Chicago when they recorded the live album Hope At The Hideout. After seeing that performance Tweedy knew he had to work with Staples. “Mavis is the walking embodiment of undaunted spirit and courage,” he says. “She’s an ever-forward looking, positive example for all human beings. And she sounds like she’s in the prime of her life.” “I wanted to make an album where every song had meaning,” Staples says, “where every song told a story and would lift you up and give you a reason to get up in the morning. And I know it’s going to feel really good singing these songs on stage.”

Mavis Staples - Live at Koerner Hall Toronto Jan 2012

And here's another blues legend brought by The Rippin Frog.

Mavis Staples has had a career like few others. She began singing professionally more than 60 years ago with her work with her family band, The Staples Singers, led by her father Pops Staples. The Staples Singers began singing in churches and for community events but by the time Mavis was out of high school they had graduated to a hit producing band and national touring act. By the 1960's The Staples Singers' were at the forefront of the civil rights movement.
Mavis Staples' latest work involved the unlikely collaboration between her and fellow Chicago resident Jeff Tweedy. Jeff is known as the front man for indie rockers Wilco. Together Jeff and Mavis produced the Grammy winning CD, You Are Not Alone. This collaboration led to a new interest in Mavis' career and introduced her to a new generation of fans and a tour that followed the release of the album brought her to festivals like Coachella where she was greeted by a new crop of Staples fans.
CBC Radio 2 caught up with Mavis Staples at Koerner Hall in Toronto where she performed with a blues trio of bass, drums and guitars and was backed by a singing group that included Vicki Randle, Donny Gerrard and Yvonne Staples.

Freddie King - Live at January Sound Studios, Dallas, Texas (1975)

After the holidays and aproaching the end of the summer we are back with some more blues.
Today with Freddie King shared here by The Rippin Frog.

Freddie King (September 3, 1934 – December 28, 1976), thought to have been born as Frederick Christian, originally recording as Freddy King, and nicknamed "The Texas Cannonball", was an influential American blues guitarist and singer. He is often mentioned as one of "the Three Kings" of electric blues guitar, along with Albert King and B.B. King, as well as being the youngest of the three.
Freddie King based his guitar style on Texas and Chicago influences and was one of the first bluesmen to have a multi-racial backing band onstage with him at live performances. He is best known for singles such as "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" (1960) and his Top 40 hit "Hide Away" (1961). He is also known for albums such as the early, instrumental-packed Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King (1961) and the later album Burglar (1974), which displayed King's mature versatility as both player and singer in a range of blues and funk styles.
King had a twenty-year recording career and became established as an influential guitarist with hits for Federal Records, in the early 1960s. He inspired American musicians such as Jerry Garcia, Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmie Vaughan[3] and others. His influence was also felt in UK, through recordings by blues revivalists such as Eric Clapton,[4] Peter Green,[5] and Chicken Shack. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

John Campbell - Voodoo Performance

A rare recording of John Campbell, here presented by our friend The Rippin Frog.

John Campbell
Voodoo Performances
Darmstadt, Germany
July 8, 1992
http://johncampbellblues.com/dimc/john_campbell_home.htm

Guitarist, singer and songwriter John Campbell had the potential of turning a whole new generation of people onto the blues in the 1990s, much the same way Stevie Ray Vaughan did in the 1980s. His vocals were so powerful and his guitar playing so fiery, you couldn't help but stop what you were doing and pay attention to what you were hearing. But unfortunately, because of frail health and a rough European tour, he suffered a heart attack while sleeping on June 13, 1993, at the age of 41.
Campbell was born in Shreveport, LA, on January 20, 1952, and grew up in Center, TX. Although he got his own guitar at age eight and began playing professionally when he was 13, he didn't get serious about playing blues for a living until he was involved in a near-fatal drag racing accident that broke several ribs, collapsed a lung and took his right eye.

In his teens, Campbell opened for people like Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Albert Collins and Son Seals, but he later got sidetracked by drag racing, and it was while he was recuperating from his near-death drag racing accident that he re-learned guitar, developing his own distinctive, rhythm and slide-heavy style, based in some measure on the music of Lightnin' Hopkins.
In 1985, after playing a variety of clubs between east Texas and New Orleans, Campbell moved to New York. One night in New York, guitarist Ronnie Earl happened upon Campbell in a club, playing with Johnny Littlejohn. Earl was so impressed that he offered to produce an album by Campbell, and the result was A Man and His Blues (Crosscut 1019), a Germany-only release that has since been made available in the U.S. That album earned Campbell a W.C. Handy Award nomination in 1989, and not long after that, the rock & roll world started to take notice of him. Although he never sent a tape to a record company in his life, after drawing ever-growing crowds to the downtown New York clubs where he played, executives at Elektra Records took notice of him and signed him to a contract. Both of his albums for Elektra, One Believer (1991) and Howlin' Mercy (1993) are brilliant, well-produced recordings, yet they only hint at Campbell's potential for greatness, had he lived longer
