East Coast Blues Summit - CBC Studio 1, Halifax

Directly from the Soundaboard blues section by The rippin' Frog:

East Coast Blues Summit: Morgan Davis, Matt Andersen, Garrett Mason, Linda Carvery, Carson Downey, Kim Dunn

Recorded: Mar. 10, 2011

Venue: CBC Studio 1, Halifax, Halifax, NS

The east coast has been a hotbed of blues music for,at least, the past fifty years. Many styles and influences...country blues, swing, urban and jump, to name a few, have contributed to what
is now an east coast sound and approach.

CBC in the Maritimes decided the time was right to showcase this wealth of blues and to produce a musical special for radio, television and online. The East Coast Blues Summit
brings together those influences, styles, and an incredible group of Maritime singers and musicians on one stage performing some of the music that inspired them as well as originals.

Matt Andersen, Morgan Davis, Linda Carvery, Garrett Mason, Theresa Mallenfant and Carson Downey are all award winning artists with deep blues roots and emotional delivery. The band is a special group of players, all being recording artists in their own right.

From the very first notes of rehearsals right through to showtime there was an atmosphere of excitement and joy to be playing together.

Suzie Vinnick, Donna Grantis and Christine Bougie are three Toronto women who are known for their songwriting skills and musicianship. As part of CBC Music's celebration of Guitar Month, we thought it would be fun to invite the ladies into the studio to show off their guitar skills.

It turned out to be a fun session for them as well. Not only will you hear the ladies perform their own songs but you can also catch them trading riffs as they collaborated with each other.

Check out some choice blues and jazz guitar with a ladies' touch.

John Mayall - Live at The Centre Vancouver

More blues aboard thanks to The rippin' Frog, this time with John Mayall in Vancouver.

John Mayall - Live at The Centre Vancouve

British born blues legend John Mayall got a very warm welcome from over a thousand devoted fans in the plush surroundings of The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts on Remembrance Day 2009. An obviously delighted Mayall returned the love with a three-hour long show, some of which is highlighted in this special CBC Concerts on Demand offering. With over fifty albums released during his career, Mayall is one of the most prolific and celebrated artists in the blues genre. This show featured music ranging from the 1966 "Beano" album, a classic, that famously included a young Eric Clapton on guitar, to his 2009 release on Eagle Records, called "Tough". He has lived in California for decades but on June 10, 2005 Queen Elizabeth named John Mayall an officer of the Order of the British Empire at the same time that Brian May of Queen and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin also received the same honour.

Joe Murphy's Blues Review - Live At Tall Ships Festival Halifax.
Credit for this goes to Gio, a buddy of the rippin frog, our sharing bluesman.

Sometimes it is the harmonica that plays the blues best, and for 40 years Joe Murphy has been proving it! Johnny Lee Hooker had him on stage for a few nights, and Dutch and Garrett Mason seem to have had him on speed dial.

Joining Murphy in this concert are The Water Street Blues Band - essentially a "who's who" of the Halifax blues scene with John Eyman on guitar, Greg "Fish" Fancy on bass, Barry Cooke at the mic and on keyboards and, drummer Gary Potts.

Percy Strother - Live At KueppersKlub, Cologne

Percy Strother shared here by the rippin frog who got this rarity from a fellow blues collector. Thank you both!

Percy Strother - Live At KueppersKlub, Cologne
FM Broadcast
1998-04-21

Percy Strother, inspired by the likes of Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Wilson Pickett, has a tremendous "power". Percy is backed by keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and occasionally the harmonica to create a unique mixture of blues, R&B and Memphis soul. Percy's warm, rich baritone vocals have earned awards for "Best Blues song" ("A good woman is hard to find") and was runner up of the "Best Blues Album" with his debut CD of the same title (Living Blues awards 1992).

Percy was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1946 and started singing at the age of nine. Already, during the work in the fields, his talents were recognized by the people around him; "just sing son, we'll pick the cotton". In the sixties he moved north and by the way of Wisconsin he eventually ended up in Minneapolis, where he became one of the leading figures in the blues scene of Minneapolis/St. Paul.

The electrifying sound of the blues has never sounded so powerful and alive as with Percy's mixture of Chicago rooted blues with R'n'B and soul influences...

Rheo Rochon    Bass

22 Years Old Keith Hallett joined by Canadian Blues Legend Dutch Mason's son Garrett Mason delivered a solid performance at the Halifax Jazz Festival last Summer.
With a blend of originals (Cook on the Dash)and great covers ( JB Lenoir's Mojo Boogie) these young upcomers of the Canadian Blues scene rock from start to finish. Keith has a new album I highly recommand and Garrett is due for his third one I hope very soon!!!
Check them guys out !!! The future of the Blues in Canada is indeed very bright !!!

It's a good soundboard recording made during the Deguello Tour, very noticeable by looking at the setlist.

Ted Nugent - State Farm Arena, Harrisburg (1982)

Ted Nugent in concert at the State Farm Arena in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, September 17, 1982.
A date from the Nugent tour, an album that has half of its tracks performed here and for me marked the start of the decline in the quality of Ted's discography work.
In my opinion they sound much better played live than heard on that album.
Though in 1995 he did a great return to good records with Spirit of the Wild.

Blackfoot - Vertical Smiles Live

Another great Southern band, Blackfoot, in this case opening for Molly Hatchet and around this time with an album freshly edited called Vertical Smiles that after Siogo continued to show a different sound (with more keyboards) from their, for me, best works as Marauder or Strikes.
However live the band were still one of the best and when we listen to this recording caught in Michigan (at the Royal Oak Music Theater) there's no denying, the weakest song being probably Living In The Limelight, but the classics just rocked!
The last three tracks are from a different concert and the sound is a little worse.

38 Special - Muzzle Flash (1981)

38 Special, one of the great southern Rock bands, for me is also one that plays on the hardest side of  this music. To get it even better, this recording caughts them on top form.
It was mainly made live in Atlanta and Memphis during 1981, it has been spread with the title Muzzle Flash being probably one their most known unofficial releases.
Strangely there at least two tracks from Rock N' Roll Strategy, an album from October 1988, so these are possibly from a different period.

Krieger, Densmore & Friends - Tramps, New York City (1997)

On October 28, 1997 Robby Krieger & John Densmore played in a New York club, now disappeared, called Tramps, with a particular purpose: the raise of funds to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation on their mission, which is making real wishes of children that are suffering.
To play mostly Doors songs, with them they brought a fine selection of musicians including some from the Oakley Krieger Band, Duane Betts (on One Way Out) and B.O.C.'s Buck Dharma and Eric Bloom to help with Roadhouse Blues (that they know so well).

The Levellers - Preston Guildhall (1992)

First time here for The Levellers, they play a happy mix of punk, folk and Celtic rock, very noticeable on the use of violin that results particularly well when performed live.
All this and more can be testified while listening to this recording at the Preston Guildhall in England on May,12  1992

One of the best live boogie-blues-rock bands, Foghat are presented here playing at the International Amphitheater in Chicago, Illinois.
This was supposedly from a July 7, 1981 show, the same month the album Girls to Chat & Boys to Bounce was released and strangely no tracks from it are present... maybe this isn't the exact date.
